  • A unit of weight or mass used in shipping to measure the difference between a ship's weight when completely empty and its weight when fully loaded. This includes the weight of everything portable on the ship, such as cargo, fuel, supplies, crew, and passengers. Traditionally, it is equal to the British long ton, 2,240 pounds, but today it is more often meant to equal the metric ton (exactly 1,000 kg or 2204.623 lbs).
